About the team & the role
As a Staff backend engineer you’ll join our "Discover and Engage" team, aiming to double the number of daily active Happeo users by year-end. You primary focus is to maintain and enhance the scalability of our search and notifications services, making sure that they are implemented and documented according to industry standards. Collaboration with fellow backend engineers is key, as we strive to develop resilient APIs for both internal and external applications. Your role involves code reviews of the backend developers and designing services capable of handling a substantial user load, reaching millions.

So what does this mean in practice?
We’re looking for someone that loves to write code, so much so that you can spend over 70% of your job doing it. We have EMs and PMs for managing and grooming and we need you to take care of our backend services together with our other senior developers. An example would be to facilitate decision making on how data is replicated and accessed by our services and all of our teams.
We’re constantly pushing the boundaries of our search and notification experience so experience in these domains is a must. Our search is powered by ElasticSearch and enhanced by our in-house generative AI. Just as Happeo brings information together, so does our search with search connectors. Our users have high expectations of our notification experience so you need to know how to maintain and scale notification services of different types and sizes. We use MailChimp, Pusher and push notifications.
What you bring
Extensive experience in backend development, using Java and/or Node.js and SQL
Expertise in distributed systems development, especially microservices and event driven systems
Excellent understanding of search engines and notification services
A customer oriented attitude, experience in solving customer problems
Strong DevOps mindset and experience with CI/CD practices and tools
Ability to convey ideas clearly to technical and non-technical audiences
Strong ability to lead by example and mentor other engineers
Ability to think strategically and help set the technical direction
